Pittsburgh, PA - Multiple regional rescue companies responded before dawn Sunday after a passenger vehicle veered off Route 28, plunged down a steep hillside, and came to rest dangerously close to active railroad tracks, prompting a multi-agency search when the vehicle's occupants fled the scene.
Emergency units were alerted shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, dispatching heavy rescue and suppression personnel from Companies 260 (Shaler Area EMS / Rescue), 191 (Millvale), 259 (Undercliff), and 149 (Etna) to Route 28 Northbound, just past the Millvale on-ramp. Initial dispatch reports indicated a vehicle off the highway and over the embankment near the rail lines with entrapment unknown.
Police officers already on scene quickly established that the vehicle's cabin was empty, confirming that the occupants had self-extricated and fled on foot into the surrounding terrain prior to the arrival of emergency apparatus.
With the crash site secured, arriving fire and rescue crews coordinated directly with law enforcement to execute a grid search of the steep hillside, wooded brush, and surrounding railroad tracks to check for injured individuals who may have collapsed or wandered away in the dark. Search teams combed the rugged embankments utilizing high-powered handlights and handheld Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) to detect any heat signatures along the corridor.
After extensive sweeps of the rail right-of-way and adjacent embankments yielded no victims, rescue crews transitioned to illumination operations, deploying floodlights from apparatus to light up the hillside so a local recovery and towing service could safely hoist the vehicle back onto the roadway. Local police departments are continuing their active investigation into the circumstances of the crash and the identities of the occupants.
