Cato, N.Y. — October 4 — On October 4, 2026, the Cato Fire Department Inc.was called to a water emergency after a vehicle drove into the water with a person still inside.
As the firefighters arrived at the scene, New York State Trooper Cady and Dan Titus, owner of Cross Lake Marina, helped rescue the individual from the vehicle and safely removed them. The person sustained several minor cuts, but there were no reports of serious injuries.
The cause of the incident was not determined. Following the rescue, fire crews worked to pull the vehicle and trailer out of the water. However, the trailer became stuck underneath the dock, complicating the recovery process. Firefighters tried multiple times to remove the trailer without damaging the dock, but further assistance was required to finish the operation.
This event demonstrated the difficulties emergency responders face in vehicle-in-water situations, such as rescuing occupants, recovering equipment, and protecting nearby structures.
Water emergencies require crews to be cautious due to unstable surfaces, submerged objects, and changing conditions.
Training in and around water helps firefighters prepare for these challenges and understand the tools and methods needed for rescue operations.
The response also illustrated the importance of quick action and teamwork between emergency personnel and the local community.
