October 21, 2025 - Much like the Great Barrington Fire Department—which self-funds much of its own training, equipment, and tools to operate without burdening taxpayers—the Great Barrington Police Department also relies on community fundraising and donations to support several of its programs. One of these initiatives is the K9 Comfort Dog Program.

Most of the costs associated with Archer, the department’s comfort dog, are covered entirely through community generosity and fundraising efforts. While the Fire Department typically favors dogs with spots, they acknowledge that Archer is exceptional and are proud to have him as part of the broader public safety team in Great Barrington.

Community members are encouraged to contribute to the K9 Comfort Dog Program through the GoFundMe link provided. In addition to his role in police-related situations, Archer also provides emotional support during difficult times. In the aftermath of tragedies such as house fires, he offers comfort and companionship to those who have lost everything, bringing a touch of warmth from a loyal four-legged friend.
