October 13, 2025 - At approximately 4:07 PM on Monday, the Great Barrington Fire Department (GBFD) responded to a reported chimney fire at 173 Division Street. Upon arrival, police officers confirmed that the blaze had extended into the roof structure.
Deputy Chief James Mead arrived shortly after, confirmed a working structure fire, and requested a first alarm, summoning assistance from the Egremont and Monterey Fire Departments, as well as Southern Berkshire Ambulance. The Sheffield Fire Department covered Great Barrington’s station during the incident and was later dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm in Housatonic while on standby.
GBFD crews swiftly contained the fire from the roof before entering the smoke-filled attic to extinguish remaining hot spots. The fire was declared under control by 4:30 PM, with no injuries reported. Damage was limited to the roof, metal chimney, and attic areas, allowing the occupants to return home later that evening.
Fire Chief Scott Turner reminded residents to schedule chimney inspections and cleanings before the heating season, emphasizing that creosote buildup remains a leading cause of chimney fires. The Great Barrington Fire Department extended its gratitude to all mutual aid partners for their prompt support and effective teamwork.
