Harrison, N.J. — October 13 — Harrison, Kearny, and Newark firefighters responded to a tractor-trailer accident and blaze on westbound Interstate 280 Tuesday morning. Crews confronted an engulfed tractor and trailer and a fuel spill that had caught fire in the concrete divider.
Tour 3 from the Harrison Fire Department was sent to the incident. When firefighters reached the scene, they discovered a blaze engulfing both the tractor and trailer. Spreading burning fuel along the median posed an extra danger for those en route.
Kearny and Newark Fire Departments sent assistance to Harrison crews via automatic mutual aid pacts. Crews from the three fire departments worked at the site to contain the car blaze and manage the burning gasoline. Early reports indicated that the trailer was empty and that the truck had entered the highway median. New Jersey State Police closed westbound lanes while firefighting operations were underway, and motorists were advised to use caution and expect delays.
