WESTFALL, PA — A 58-year-old woman died following a swimming incident in the Delaware River on September 3. The woman and a male companion had been swimming in the river when the incident occurred. Her body was recovered on the Pennsylvania side of the river after a caller reported seeing a person floating in the water shortly before 12:30 p.m.
The caller initially reported that the woman appeared to be wearing a life jacket. However, police later confirmed that the life jacket was floating nearby and was not being worn when she was recovered.
Police confirmed that the woman had been swimming with a male companion. The man made it safely from the river access point at the Westfall, Pennsylvania, boat launch to West End Beach in Port Jervis, New York. The woman remained near the Pennsylvania side of the river, where she was recovered.
According to police, the woman was either a Port Jervis resident or had been staying in the area for the summer. Her residency status was not definitively established in the available information.
Water rescue teams from Port Jervis, Huguenot, and Sparrowbush, New York, along with Westfall and Matamoras, Pennsylvania, assisted in the recovery. Police and EMS personnel from Orange and Pike counties also responded to the scene.
