PORT JERVIS, NY -- Not every fire and EMS call for assistance is for an actual emergency-in-progress in Port Jervis. Sometimes it's for preventative assistance, with some fun included.
That was the case for Port Jervis Tourism Board’s annual cardboard boat regatta held recently at West End Beach as summer’s end approached. Twelve cardboard crafts and crews took to the Delaware River, under the careful watch of Port Jervis Fire Department’s Water Operations Team and EMS crews. While no serious rescues were needed, cardboard ‘boat operators and their crews’ were assisted in launching and debarking, as well as with minor crew injuries. A rescue boat was sent from shore to several feet away this year to assist one first-time operator when the river’s current kept him from continuing onward to shore. Last year, one person was assisted with sore leg muscles attributed to getting back into her overturned boat from the rocky river bed and current. Both said they will return to participate in next year’s 2028 regatta, once again.
Co-hosted by Port Jervis Recreation Department and PJ Tourism Board, funds raised through the event were used to benefit PJFD’s Special Operations Squad. Members of the squad, along with neighboring water rescue teams, are called often to the Delaware River for actual emergency situations and are grateful for the support and financial contribution to their squad.
