October 16, 2025 - One of the hallmark events of the TSFRS Fire Prevention program is its annual engagement with the Wilson School District Elementary Schools. Each year, every 2nd-grade class in the district visits Station 85 for a hands-on fire safety education experience.

During each visit, the students arrive by bus and are divided into two groups. One group learns how to report an emergency and practices dialing 911 using a 911 simulator. The other group participates in a session inside the Kids Safety Trailer, where they learn about residential fire safety, smoke detectors, and meet a firefighter dressed in full gear. The session concludes with students practicing how to safely escape a simulated home filled with theatrical smoke for added realism. After both groups have completed their activities, they switch places to ensure every child experiences both sessions. The visit concludes with a class photo in front of a fire truck.

Each class receives approximately one hour of education before their bus returns to pick them up and bring the next class for its session. In total, five elementary schools—comprising 25 classes and about 470 students plus staff—participated in this year’s program.

Through this initiative, every Wilson School District student receives fire safety education by the time they graduate elementary school. The program’s success is evident through feedback from teachers, counselors, and former students who have shared stories of using the knowledge gained to respond effectively during real emergencies. This impact serves as a meaningful reminder of the value and importance of TSFRS’s ongoing fire prevention efforts.
