Westerly, R.I. — September 30 — The Westerly Fire Department is getting ready to incorporate a brand-new handheld sonar device called the AquaEye Pro into its water rescue missions. Volunteer firefighters have trained on the unit over the last two weeks, and more exercises are scheduled before it is put into service. The AquaEye Pro detects human shapes underwater by fusing artificial intelligence and sonar technology. It provides rescuers with information about the distance, depth, and direction of possible targets and can scan an area of up to 8,000 square meters in a matter of minutes.
