Pittsburgh, PA - The Sophie Masloff Fireboat-1 has recently received a significant upgrade to its sonar system, enhancing its ability to see beneath the waters of Pittsburgh’s three rivers while crews operate above. The new system, the Garmin Livescope Plus Sonar, captured impressive underwater imagery of the Monongahela River, providing critical intelligence that supports navigation, safety, and search operations in the often murky waters where visibility is limited.
The upgraded capabilities of the Fireboat-1 include:
Livescope Plus Sonar: Delivers real-time, high-resolution images of underwater activity, even in low-visibility conditions.
Side Scan Sonar: Offers wide-area imaging of the riverbed for more comprehensive situational awareness.
Integrated Garmin Electronics Suite: Combines HD radar, chart plotting, FLIR thermal imaging, and touchscreen controls for seamless navigation and operational efficiency.
In addition to its advanced sonar technology, the Fireboat-1 is outfitted with a pump capable of delivering over 3,000 gallons per minute, as well as breathing apparatus and multiple deck-mounted monitors for firefighting operations, ensuring the crew is fully prepared to respond effectively to emergencies on the water.
