SUSSEX, N.J., Oct. 7, 2025 — The Sussex Fire Department began its Fire Prevention Week visits with a stop at Sussex Christian School, where firefighters taught students key lessons in fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The visit focused on essential home safety practices, including testing smoke detectors, changing batteries regularly, and establishing safe family meeting spots in case of a fire. Students were also reminded of the importance of practicing home fire drills to ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety with Lithium-Ion Batteries,” guided much of the discussion. With the younger students, firefighters talked about which household items use lithium-ion batteries and which do not. For the older grades, the lesson went deeper—covering safe charging locations, proper use of approved charging devices, and avoiding overcharging or unsafe setups that can lead to fires.

The Sussex Fire Department will continue its fire prevention visits throughout the week, engaging local schools and community groups to promote awareness and proactive safety habits.
