Oct. 8, 2025 — The Sussex Fire Department, joined by Beemerville Fire Company and Colesville Fire Company, spent the day teaching fire prevention and safety to students at Clifton E. Lawrence School.

Inside the classroom, firefighters spoke with students about important fire safety topics — including safe places to charge electronic devices, how to practice home fire drills, and the importance of setting a family meeting spot in case of an emergency. Firefighters also demonstrated what they look like when fully geared up for a fire, helping children understand that firefighters are helpers, not someone to fear.

After the indoor lessons, students headed outside to meet members of the Wantage Fire Departments, where they toured fire engines, explored equipment, and asked questions about firefighting tools and operations.

Students were eager to participate and came prepared with thoughtful questions. “It was a great day for everyone involved,” the department shared. “We’re proud to partner with our neighboring departments to help keep our community’s youngest residents informed and safe.”
