NORTH GREENBUSH, NY – On September 5, 2025, at 8:37 AM, the Defreestville Fire Department, Wynantskill Fire Department, North Greenbush Ambulance, and Clinton Heights Fire Department’s rapid intervention team were dispatched to 33 Sandra Drive in response to multiple calls reporting a well-involved camper fire threatening a nearby structure. A thick, heavy black column of smoke was visible from the city of Albany and from both sides of the town of North Greenbush against the morning sky. Police quickly arrived on scene—since the fire was just down the road from their station—and notified dispatchers that there was a well-involved camper fire approximately 10 feet from a residence. The police unit was also checking to ensure everyone had evacuated the structure.

Wynantskill Car Two arrived on scene and immediately notified dispatch that they had a working fire, prompting a re-transmission of the alarm. Engine 9-7 arrived shortly after, and firefighters promptly deployed a 1¾-inch hand line up the driveway. They positioned themselves between the exposure building and the camper, beginning an aggressive knockdown of the heavy fire conditions. Additional firefighters deployed a hand line along the neighboring property to knock down remaining visible flames. A water supply was established from a nearby hydrant.

Engine 42-7 and Squad Eight arrived to assist with overhaul operations, exposing hotspots and hidden fire inside the camper. Firefighters checked the home for any signs of fire extension but found none.

Command requested a fire investigator to the scene to determine the cause of the camper fire. Firefighters worked for an extended period overhauling the destroyed camper. Thanks to the rapid response of the first-due engine, firefighters were able to prevent fire extension to the structure and stop the fire from potentially spreading to the nearby apartment building. During the early stages of the fire, before firefighter arrival, trees above and next to the camper had become involved.

The cause of the fire has not been released publicly. No injuries have been reported.
