At 5:46 am on Tuesday, 10/7/25 the Preston, Laurel Hill and Norwich Fire Departments were dispatched to the former Norwich State Hospital on Laurel Hill Road for a structure fire.
P1 and Car 6 arrived with fire through the roof of a 2 story vacant brick building.
East Great Plain Ladder 5 & Rescue 5, Mohegan Tribal FAST and Mohegan Fire Company’s forestry truck were added on the working fire. Most companies staged on Route 12 while command looked for the best access. Companies prevented the fire from extending to the brush and the Preston Fire Marshal's Office is investigating. The former hospital closed in 1996 and has been plagued with fires through the years.
