CLIFTON PARK, NY - A fire on Saturday, October 2nd damaged three buildings at the Twin Lakes apartments in Clifton Park.

The fire ripped through buildings 30, 31 and 32, with smoke seen from several miles away. The first crews to arrive were met with heavy smoke and fire, prompting a second and eventually third alarm. Authorities say they were delayed in responding because one of the residents tried to put the fire out himself before calling 911.

Crews from eight companies responded, including Clifton Park, Halfmoon-Waterford, Hillcrest, West Crescent, Vischer Ferry, Boght, and Colonie. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported. A total of 16 apartments were damaged or destroyed, displacing 26 residents.

Investigators say the preliminary investigation determined that a discarded cigarette on a porch led to the fire. The Red Cross is assisting 10 of the residents who were displaced.
