Old Saybrook, Conn. — September 9 — A working structure fire was reported at a residence on Charles Street at 1:50 p.m., prompting the Old Saybrook Fire Department to respond. When neighbors noticed black smoke coming from the porch area, they called the police. When Engine 6 arrived soon after dispatch, there was still a lot of fire. A Level-1 Tanker Task Force was requested because there was no nearby water source. However, after crews launched a vigorous interior attack that contained the fire, that request was later canceled. The Essex Tanker was used to supply water on site. No injuries were reported, and mutual aid organizations from Clinton, Westbrook, and Old Lyme were sent out but subsequently canceled prior to staging.
