Firefighters encountered heavy fire showing from the third floor of a residential building during an afternoon structure fire that displaced 19 occupants. New Britain Fire Department crews were dispatched at approximately 3:55 p.m. on September 27, 2026, to 169 Washington Street in New Britain, Connecticut. First-arriving companies found fire extending from the front of the three-story building and initiated an interior attack.
Crews knocked down the main body of fire in less than 15 minutes, with the incident reported under control by approximately 4:45 p.m. All 19 occupants evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. The building was deemed uninhabitable.
The American Red Cross assisted displaced residents with temporary accommodations, while city officials worked with the property owner on additional housing arrangements. The New Britain Fire Marshal's Office continued investigating the cause.
