September 7, 2025 — The Broome County Animal Rescue Team hosted a large-scale agricultural emergency training at the Broome County Fairgrounds, bringing together responders from across Broome and Chenango Counties as well as the Onondaga County Animal Rescue Team.
The training, facilitated by Broome County Fire and EMS Coordinators, featured hands-on scenarios designed to prepare firefighters and rescue personnel for complex agricultural incidents. Exercises included a simulated livestock trailering accident, rescue and recovery operations using Onondaga’s horse training prop, grain bin entrapment and rescue techniques, and hazard reviews of farming chemicals and materials, particularly in dairy operations.
Local fire departments from Whitney Point, Port Crane, Kirkwood, Chenango Bridge, Harpursville, East Maine, the Town of Binghamton, and Greene participated in the training.
Organizers expressed gratitude to the many businesses and organizations that made the training possible, including Lindsey Equipment, Winsor Acres, Don Snow Trucking, Broome County Farm Bureau, Broome County Tech Rescue Team, Whittaker Farms, Lutz Feed (Oneonta), the Broome County Fair Board, and Haisley AG & Auto.
Officials emphasized that agricultural emergencies present unique challenges for responders, and specialized training is critical for ensuring the safety of both residents and animals.
