READING, Pa. (Wednesday, Sept. 3) — Firefighters from the Township of Spring responded early Wednesday to assist at a third-alarm blaze in a four-story multi-family building on North Fifth Street.

Rescue Engine 85 was dispatched on the second-alarm assignment and initially worked with Wyomissing Ladder 79 to stretch hose lines to an exposure and the fourth floor of the fire building. When crews were ordered out, members were reassigned to check another exposure after a fire alarm was received.

Firefighters searched all floors and reported a light haze coming from outside. They also identified a standpipe with roof access in a fourth-floor stairwell.

Working with Exeter Rescue Engine 25, the crew forced a barred window and advanced a hose line to the roof. From there, personnel attacked fire in the original building and an adjacent structure before later assisting with overhaul operations.

Rescue Engine 85 remained on scene for about four hours before being released by command.
