Rochester Crews Battle Early-Morning Plante Street Fire

Firefighters encountered heavy fire involving an enclosed porch, nearby shed and vehicle during an early-morning residential fire that brought several mutual-aid companies into the city.

Rochester Fire Department was initially dispatched to the structure fire at 30 Plante Street at approximately 1:55 a.m. on September 19, 2026, in Rochester, New Hampshire. Arriving crews found heavy fire at the single-story home and struck a box alarm for mutual aid and the recall of off-duty Rochester firefighters.

Neighbors spotted the fire and alerted two residents, allowing both to escape before firefighters arrived. Both residents were later transported to a local hospital for evaluation, with one sustaining a burn injury. Smoke alarms were present but did not alert the occupants.

Crews knocked down the heaviest fire from the exterior before making entry from the side and rear. Firefighters searched the basement and first floor, extinguished the remaining fire and checked the attic for extension. A cat was removed from the home but did not survive.

Dover, Farmington and Somersworth firefighters assisted at the scene. Milton, Barrington and Berwick fire departments provided station coverage in Rochester. Rochester Police, Frisbie EMS and Eversource also assisted.

Investigators determined the fire began inside the enclosed porch and extended into the kitchen and attic. Several medical oxygen cylinders stored on the porch failed during the fire, consistent with reports of explosions and potentially contributing to fire intensity. Due to the extent of the damage, investigators were unable to identify a specific ignition source, and the cause was classified as undetermined.
