Ashfield Crews Battled Trailer Loaded With Hay

Ashfield, MA — September 12 — The Ashfield Fire Department responded shortly after 6 p.m.on Saturday to Cape Street due to a reported fire involving a hay truck.Engine 1 came from the Ashfield Lake Lighted Boat Parade and found a 22-foot landscape trailer that was almost completely engulfed in flames.The trailer was transporting approximately 150 bales of hay.
Assistant Chief Matthew Haskins requested additional tankers, engines, and personnel as crews worked to bring the fire under control. The driver had disconnected the tow vehicle before the fire spread to it, and there were no injuries reported.
Firefighters used around 18,000 gallons of water during the operation.
The extended suppression effort was supported by tankers and water from Main Street hydrants.The fire was put out by about 8 p.m., but Cape Street remained closed until after 10 p.m.as crews removed burned hay, debris, and equipment.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Goshen, Williamsburg, Cummington, Shelburne Falls, Buckland, Hawley, Conway, and Deerfield. Police and emergency personnel also assisted during the incident, and Deerfield provided station coverage.
The Ashfield Fire Department is a combination department that offers fire, rescue, and first-response emergency medical services. Its headquarters is located at 420 Main Street.
