Hanover Crews Responded to Dartmouth Chemical Spill

Hanover, NH — September 19 — On Saturday evening, crews from the Hanover NH Fire Department were dispatched to a reported chemical spill at a science building located on the Dartmouth College campus.

The B Shift responded with Engine 6, Ambulance 2, Car 1, and Car 2 to handle the situation.

Firefighters collaborated with Dartmouth College Health and Safety staff and the Midwestern New Hampshire Regional HazMat Team to evaluate and manage the spill.

A single individual was assessed and provided care at the scene. According to officials, the person was not taken to a hospital. WMUR also noted that the type of substance involved and the conditions that caused the spill had not been disclosed.

Dartmouth’s Environmental Health and Safety program classifies chemical spills and exposures as emergencies that require a specific response. College protocols require securing affected areas and contacting emergency responders when a spill cannot be safely managed or involves an unknown material.

The Midwestern New Hampshire Regional HazMat Team is stationed in the Upper Valley and is activated through the Lebanon Fire Department as part of the state’s regional hazardous materials response network. The Hanover Fire Department offers fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to the town, visitors, and the Dartmouth College community. The department is based at 48 Lyme Road in Hanover.
