DAYTON, Pa. (Thursday, Sept. 18) — Dayton District Volunteer Fire Company assisted neighboring departments this week in two structure fires, including one where crews cared for a cat rescued from the flames.
Firefighters responded with Distant Volunteer Fire Department to a blaze where members helped extinguish flames, supply water and support operations. Assistant Chief Austin Brocious used a bumper line for the initial knockdown on cars near the bulk of the fire.
Two Dayton firefighters, Sara Lockhart and Brianna Keener, treated a stray cat that had been pulled from the building, giving it oxygen and wrapping it for relief from smoke exposure.
Despite the call, Dayton members continued with their regular Wednesday drill to review brush equipment and water pumping in preparation for dry conditions.
At about 2 a.m. Thursday, the company was dispatched to Redbank Township to assist Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Department with a garage fire. An engine rescue crew and a tanker operated at the scene for roughly two hours.
