Greenpoint 4th Alarm

At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the FDNY responded to a report of a fire at 135 North 5th Street in Brooklyn. Arriving units encountered fire in a restaurant and extending into two adjoining restaurants through the cockloft.

"About 35 minutes into the operation, we had a smoke explosion," Deputy Chief Michele Fitzsimmons said. "We transmitted a mayday out of an abundance of caution to make sure that none of our members were injured."

Approximately 115 units responded to the 4-alarm fire. Six firefighters suffered minor injuries. The fire was placed under control just before 8:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
