On 09/18/2025, at 15:58 hours, the Bagdad Fire Department was dispatched to the 6400 block of Bay Oaks Drive for a reported residential structure fire. The 911 caller stated they observed smoke coming from the residence.
Upon arrival, fire crews made entry and located a working fire in the kitchen area. Fire suppression operations were initiated, and secondary crews conducted a primary search of the residence. During the search, firefighters discovered eight dogs inside the home—two adult mixed-breed Pit Bulls and six newborn puppies. Both adult dogs were in respiratory distress. Firefighters immediately administered oxygen using pet masks. The six puppies were also treated with oxygen, with two to three of them presenting in serious distress. Personnel from Lifeguard EMS, Paramedic Jesse Montana, and EMT Macenzie Hill assisted with oxygen bottles and providing care. EMT Hill diligently worked to resuscitate one puppy in critical condition, whose survival was credited to her efforts. Several neighborhood residents also assisted by monitoring the animals’ breathing and providing comfort.
The Santa Rosa County Animal Control Office was contacted, and the on-call officer responded to the scene. With all eight dogs requiring further care, a decision was made to transport them to a veterinarian in Pensacola. The animals were transported by their owners.
No other injuries were reported. The fire left the residence uninhabitable.
Bagdad Fire Department was assisted on scene by Avalon Station 12, Pace Station 21, Skyline Station 22, and Midway Truck 36. The Santa Rosa County CERT Team also responded in support.
