Flames Hidden Inside Second-Floor Walls Spark Multi-Town Mutual Aid Mobilization in Nassau County

Bethpage, NY - An afternoon call reporting smoke in a basement led firefighters to a hidden fire burning inside second-floor structural walls on Friday, prompting a coordinated multi-department mutual aid response across eastern Nassau County.

At approximately 3:28 p.m. on August 21, Bethpage Fire Department Dispatcher Baudille received an emergency call reporting active smoke issuing from the basement of a private dwelling at 33 Ellen Street. Engine 9044 was the first unit to arrive on scene, where crews quickly determined that the smoke was travelling through structural channels from an active fire burning within the wall cavities on the home's second floor.

Engines 9077 and 9055 arrived simultaneously, followed closely by Bethpage Rescue 3 and Ladder 4. Firefighters stretched attack hoselines to the second story while opening up walls and ceilings to pinpoint and saturate the hidden fire before it could breach into the attic space.

To support the heavy interior operations, mutual aid ladder and engine companies were summoned to the scene from Farmingdale (Ladder 926), Hicksville (Ladder 937), Syosset (582), and Levittown (627). Medical standby and emergency care resources were deployed by the Wantagh Fire Department, the Nassau County Police Department, and Bethpage Ambulance 9056. The South Farmingdale and Plainview fire departments provided station coverage to safeguard the Bethpage district against concurrent emergencies.

Fireground operations were initially commanded by Lieutenant McEvoy before being transitioned to Assistant Chief Trimarco. The fire was successfully brought under control without civilian or firefighter injuries.

The cause and origin of the blaze remain under active investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
