Rochester Firefighters Breach Boarded Windows for Ventilation and Egress at Vacant Home Blaze

Rochester, NY - Rochester firefighters contained an afternoon fire inside a boarded-up vacant dwelling on St. Paul Street, marking the department’s second structural response of the day.

On the afternoon of September 1, crews were dispatched to 1520 St. Paul Street following 911 calls reporting smoke emanating from a boarded-up residential structure. Arriving companies conducted an immediate size-up and located a small fire burning near one of the building's front entrances, bringing it under control with a rapid initial attack.

To ensure fireground safety inside the secured structure, personnel systematically removed exterior boards from windows and access points. The tactical breaching cleared internal heat and smoke to enhance interior visibility and established multiple unobstructed emergency egress paths for interior search and suppression teams in the event of deteriorating structural or thermal conditions.

The incident was mitigated without civilian or firefighter injuries, and fire damage was confined without structural extension.

The blaze was the second working fire handled by the Rochester Fire Department during the shift, following a morning kitchen incident on Clifford Avenue. The cause and origin of the St. Paul Street fire remain under active investigation by city fire investigators.
