Two Route 8 Incidents Keep Shelton Fire and EMS Crews Busy

Fire and EMS crews handled two separate incidents on Route 8 Monday evening, including a rollover requiring extrication followed later by a crash-related vehicle fire.

The first incident was reported at approximately 7:09 p.m. on September 7, 2026, on Route 8 south between Exits 9 and 11 in Shelton, Connecticut. Responders arrived to find a vehicle on its driver's side in the highway median. Two young occupants had exited the vehicle before firefighters arrived, while a third remained inside.

Fourteen firefighters stabilized the vehicle and removed a portion of the roof to gain access to the remaining occupant. The extrication was completed in approximately 10 minutes, after which Echo Hose Ambulance personnel provided patient care. All three occupants were transported for further evaluation, with the extricated patient taken to a trauma center.

Deputy Chief Paul Wilson commanded the response, which included Squad 1, Engine 2, Rescue 30 and Cars 3 and 6. The highway was reopened following the operation.

Not long after clearing the rollover, crews were sent back to Route 8 for a second incident, this time involving a crash-related vehicle fire. The call was received at approximately 9:03 p.m., with initial reports indicating a possible occupant trapped. While units were responding, dispatch advised that all occupants were out of the vehicle and that it was well involved.

Assistant Chief Mike Plavcan arrived in Car 6, confirmed the working vehicle fire and assumed command, with Deputy Chief Wilson handling operations. Engine 2 personnel stretched an attack line and began suppression operations, assisted by Squad 1 and Engine 35. Firefighters brought the fire under control within minutes.

Echo Hose Ambulance personnel evaluated the occupants and transported one patient to the hospital for further evaluation. No additional injuries were reported from the second incident.
