Overnight Fire Rips Through Canaan Structure; Firefighter Injured as Multi-Town Crews Mobilize

CANAAN, NY — An early morning structure fire drew a coordinated multi-agency response along State Route 22 on Friday, where firefighters from New York and Massachusetts deployed three attack lines and an interstate tanker shuttle to suppress the blaze.

At approximately 3:14 a.m. on September 11, 2026, Columbia County 911 dispatched the Canaan Task Force to a reported structure fire on State Route 22 in the Town of Canaan. Canaan Engine 3441 arrived first on scene, establishing position as the primary attack apparatus and deploying three handlines to initiate fire suppression.

Canaan Tanker 3432 arrived shortly thereafter, providing an immediate water supply to feed the attack engine. Fireground command was established by Canaan Car 2.

To maintain continuous water flow in the non-hydrant area, arriving mutual aid personnel from the Lebanon Valley Protective Association alongside Massachusetts units from Richmond and West Stockbridge assembled two portable dump ponds and organized a dedicated tanker shuttle. East Chatham Engine 7512 established and operated a remote tanker fill site at Peaceful Valley, shuttling thousands of gallons back to the fire scene.

One firefighter received on-scene medical treatment for a minor injury and was released without hospitalization. No civilian injuries were reported.

The incident brought together extensive apparatus and personnel from across the border, including Canaan Protective Fire Company, East Chatham Fire Department, Red Rock Volunteer Fire Department, Lebanon Valley Protective Association, Richmond Volunteer Fire Department, and the West Stockbridge Fire Department. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police provided perimeter and traffic control throughout the operation.
