Flames Venting from First Floor: Dunkirk Fire Department Leads Multi-Agency Response on Canary Street Corner

DUNKIRK, NY — Firefighters from five departments mounted an extensive suppression effort early Tuesday morning, battling heavy fire conditions that forced interior crews to reposition defensively during a multi-hour battle at a single-family dwelling.

At approximately 2:12 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the City of Dunkirk Fire Department was initially dispatched for a reported structure fire in the area of 509 Canary Street. Upon arriving on location, first responders corrected the primary incident address to 49 West Fifth Street, finding active fire rapidly venting from multiple first-floor windows along both the West Fifth Street and Canary Street exposures of the two-and-a-half-story wood-frame home.

Crews advanced multiple handlines and mounted an initial, aggressive interior attack. However, due to the intense volume of fire and early manpower limitations on scene, officers ordered firefighters to transition to exterior defensive tactics to knock down the bulk of the fire and protect adjacent exposures. The primary residence sustained extensive structural damage throughout, while the neighboring home at 47 West Fifth Street suffered minor exterior damage.

Approximately 40 firefighters from the City of Dunkirk, Fredonia, East Town of Dunkirk, Sheridan, and the Bay Creek Fire District operated on scene for more than two and a half hours before declaring the fire fully under control.

Eight occupants safely evacuated the home prior to total structural involvement, with three individuals transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. Several household pets tragically perished in the fire. The displaced residents are receiving emergency housing and recovery assistance from the American Red Cross.
