Midnight Firefight: South Plainfield and Area Crews Battle 2-Alarm Garage and Roof Fire

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — Firefighters mounted an aggressive, multi-company attack early Monday morning to contain a fast-moving garage fire that spread into the roof of an occupied home.

Emergency dispatch alerted the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department at 1:46 a.m. (0146 hours) on September 8 to the 1300 block of Crown Lane in Middlesex County for a reported structure fire.

Arriving first on scene, Chief of Department Campbell (Chief 50) established Command and encountered a two-car garage fully involved with heavy fire, with flames already traveling and extending across the roof structure of the attached residential dwelling. Recognizing the rapid fire propagation and heavy volume of fire, Chief 50 promptly transmitted a second alarm to bring in critical mutual aid resources.

First-due Engine 4 stretched a high-volume 2½-inch handline to make an aggressive initial knockdown on the body of fire roaring in the garage. Truck 7 arrived, positioned on the front side of the dwelling, and threw aerial and ground ladders to access the roof for vertical ventilation, trench cuts, and structural checks. Engine 5 arrived shortly after to supply additional operational manpower.

Due to intense thermal conditions and smoke pushing through the interior of the home, extensive mutual aid manpower was requested directly to the fireground. Responding crews included Edison Firefighters IAFF Local 1197 (Engine 4 and Car 8 / Battalion Chief), Plainfield Firefighters FMBA Local 7 (Engine 3), Colonia Volunteer Fire Department (Truck 12-2-1), and New Market Fire Department (Engine 62). Together, interior crews pulled ceilings, opened wall voids to stop horizontal fire travel, and knocked down all active fire extension.
