September 11, 2025 — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department marked the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a morning of remembrance and reflection.
Events began with a Tunnel to Towers Tribute Run from the Church of Saint Ann on West Avon Road to the Company 1 Firehouse on Darling Drive. Firefighters ran in gear to honor FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who lost his life when the towers collapsed after running on foot from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center site.
Following the run, AVFD held its annual memorial service, featuring guest speaker Brigadier General Daniel McHale (Ret.), who commanded the Connecticut Army National Guard Quick Reaction Force that deployed multiple times following the attacks. The ceremony included a moment of silence, the Firefighter’s Prayer delivered by Father George Roberts of St. James Parish, a memorial poem read by retired Avon Police Officer Sue Kassey, and musical performances by the Sweet Adelines and the Avon High School Choral Singers under director Andrew Brochu.
“Thank you to everyone who made this morning so special and joined us to remember, reflect, and recommit,” AVFD said in its message. “For our volunteers, every day exemplifies that recommitment in service to our AVFD and community.”
The department will continue its tribute with Emergency Services Day on Sunday, September 21, celebrating and thanking all who serve in the spirit of those lost on 9/11.
