Smoke alarms alert residents to late-night fire in Gardner

GARDNER, Mass. (Sept. 6, 2025) — Smoke alarms alerted residents of a multi-family home on Ash Street just before midnight Friday, helping them escape a porch fire, officials said.
Firefighters arrived to find flames on a second-floor porch and stretched a 1 3/4-inch handline to extinguish the blaze. Crews remained on scene for about two hours.
The fire appeared to be accidental, officials said.
Gardner fire officials emphasized that functioning smoke alarms likely prevented a more serious outcome.
