CHARLESTOWN, RI — August 15 — Charlestown Richmond Fire Department received a call about a grill fire and worked with Cross Mills Fire Department to respond.Engine 713 arrived at the scene and confirmed that the fire had already been put out before the crews arrived.

Firefighters examined the grill and the surrounding area to ensure there were no remaining dangers.

The incident also brought attention to a fire prevention issue related to cooking equipment.

According to the U.S.

Fire Administration, not cleaning grills was a major cause of home grill fires, responsible for 29 percent of such incidents between 2014 and 2018.The agency suggested cleaning grills after every use to remove grease that can catch fire.It also recommended keeping grills at least three feet away from walls, decks, railings, and other flammable materials.

This response provided another instance of how such calls can support community efforts to reduce fire risks.

Firefighters confirmed the fire was extinguished and reinforced the importance of maintaining grills properly and placing them safely.
