CASTORLAND, NY — AUGUST 7, 2026 — On Friday morning, Castorland Fire Co. Inc. responded to a fully involved garbage truck fire on State Route 410 close to Highland Avenue.

A Castorland firefighter who had just left the station discovered the fire at around 10:03 a.m. and came back to notify the other firefighters. Firefighters boarded Engine 2, reported the position, radioed dispatch, and said the engine was responding.

Soon after, the fire chief and Engine 2 arrived. The vehicle and trailer were completely involved, according to the chief.

Firefighters started fighting the fire after deploying a handline. Firefighters set up a water supply from a nearby hydrant as more personnel arrived.

After extinguishing the cab, firemen had to remove the flaming debris from the truck's box because it was transporting rubbish. Firefighters unloaded the trash using hand tools until the last of the fire was totally put out.

Traffic control at Railroad and Bowman streets was aided by a New York State Police unit and a sheriff's team. In order to inspect the road, the New York State Department of Transportation was also summoned.

The trash firm dispatched a tow truck to remove the damaged vehicle and sent another truck to replenish the materials.

At around 11 a.m., Castorland firefighters gathered up their hose and went back to the station, restarting Engine 2.
