At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, a single-engine Cessna 170 was forced to make an emergency landing on the southern end of Black Beach in West Falmouth after running out of fuel. The pilot, traveling from Western Massachusetts to Falmouth Airpark in East Falmouth, reported that strong headwinds significantly increased fuel consumption, leading to the emergency.
The landing was executed safely with no damage to the aircraft and no injuries. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, brought the plane down on a clear stretch of beach during low tide, avoiding any risk to beachgoers.
Falmouth Fire Rescue and Falmouth Police responded to the scene. Officials confirmed there were no environmental concerns related to the landing. After coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane was refueled with assistance from Falmouth Airpark personnel. Shortly before 4:00 p.m., the aircraft successfully took off from the beach and completed its flight to Falmouth Airpark, arriving safely before high tide.
