Durham, ME - A fast response from local and regional first responders averted disaster when a fire broke out inside a residential home, with crews successfully knocking down the blaze in under twenty minutes.

The incident began at approximately 10:26 a.m. on the morning of August 26, 2026, when emergency dispatchers mobilized crews to a residential structure fire on Auburn Pownal Road in Androscoggin County. Prior to the arrival of apparatus, all occupants alongside their family pets were able to safely evacuate the home without injury.

Durham Fire & Rescue arrived to find an active fire and mounted an aggressive, coordinated attack with heavy support from surrounding communities. A robust mutual aid network mobilized to the scene, bringing vital resources and personnel from the Auburn Fire Department, Pownal Fire & Rescue, Freeport Fire Rescue, Lisbon Fire Department, New Gloucester Fire Rescue, Topsham Fire & Rescue, and the Brunswick Maine Fire Department.

Thanks to the rapid deployment of hose lines and seamless teamwork across eight cooperating agencies, the fire was declared fully extinguished within just 20 minutes of arrival. Following overhaul and ventilation, investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office completed an on-scene investigation and determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
