EAST ROCKAWAY, NY — August 27, 2026 — Smoke was seen in a basement, prompting East Rockaway firemen to go to a suspected home fire on Lawson Avenue on Friday.

When Engine 404 and Ladder 403 arrived nearly at the same time, they discovered smoke coming from an unidentified source in the basement. As they looked into the source of the smoke, firefighters quickly extended a hose line to the front door.

A radio-controlled vehicle that had been charging and caught fire was found by firefighters. The toy that was on fire was taken out of the house and completely put out. After then, workers examined the house to make sure the fire had not spread to other parts of it.

According to the East Rockaway Fire Department, Engine 406, Engine 405, Ambulance 408, and Command Post 4091 also arrived and worked at the scene for almost an hour. The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office was notified because lithium-ion batteries were involved. The county Fire Marshal's Office includes a dedicated Hazardous Materials Response Division among its emergency-response resources.
