CANAJOHARIE, NY — August 5, 2026 — Firefighters from Canajoharie responded to a reported fire at an apartment building on Church Street in the Village of Canajoharie on Wednesday morning. According to the original report, the fire was out, but there was still smoke inside the structure.

Around eleven in the morning, the department was sent out. When Chief Frank Nestle arrived at 11:04 a.m., he verified that everyone had left the building. There was a lot of smoke on the second story.

Crews extended a 1½-inch assault line to the second level when Engine 2 arrived. Firefighters found the source of the fire and put it out. Once the fire was out, crews checked for extension and confirmed that the fire had not spread beyond the original area.

Firefighters then used positive-pressure ventilation fans to clear smoke from the structure.

The Fort Plain Fire Department was requested for an engine and additional manpower. The Montgomery County Cause and Origin Team was also called to investigate the fire.

The Canajoharie Police Department and the village code officer assisted at the scene, while the American Red Cross was notified to help residents affected by the fire.
