Yorktown, NY - Quick aggressive hose work and seamless tactical adaptability kept a midnight basement fire from spreading into a private dwelling along Granite Springs Road early Thursday morning.
At 12:29 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department, supported by a dedicated Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) from the Bedford Hills Fire Department, was dispatched to the 200 block of Granite Springs Road for a reported house fire.
In total, two dozen Yorktown Heights volunteers turned out with Car 2531, Car 2532, Engine 271, Engine 272, Ladder 51, Tanker 14, and Rescue 16.
First-due YHFD units arrived to find smoke pushing from the basement of a private residence. Interior crews stretched handlines into the structure, rapidly locating and suppressing an active fire centered in the basement kitchen area before it could extend vertically into the upper living quarters.
While establishing a pressurized municipal water supply at the street, crews on Engine 271 encountered an out-of-service "dead hydrant." Firefighters immediately adapted, shifting to a booster backup and nursing operation with Tanker 14 to guarantee uninterrupted water flow to the attack lines.
With the primary fire knocked down within minutes, incident commanders scaled back the box alarm. Responders isolated household utilities, conducted comprehensive thermal checks for hidden extension, and cleared smoke from the home with positive-pressure ventilation.
No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. All units cleared the scene and returned to service by approximately 2:00 a.m., with the Westchester County Cause & Origin Task Force handling the ongoing investigation.
