Westport, MA - Westport Fire Department units responded to a reported structure fire at Westport Market on American Legion Highway in Westport, Massachusetts, during the early morning hours, after reports of heavy smoke issuing from the building.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions throughout the structure and quickly initiated an aggressive interior fire attack. Crews advanced handlines to the seat of the fire and worked rapidly to prevent extension into the attic space, bringing the incident under control before it could escalate into a more serious structure fire.

Firefighters coordinated suppression and ventilation efforts to clear smoke from the building while ensuring the fire remained confined to its point of origin. Although structural damage was limited, the building sustained significant smoke damage throughout the interior.

The fire, which occurred around 2:00 AM on August 17, 2026, was determined to have originated from a piece of refrigeration equipment and is not considered suspicious in nature.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by Tiverton Fire and Dartmouth Fire District 3, who supported operations and ensured adequate coverage during the incident.
