YAPHANK, NY — On Saturday, August 23, over 100 junior firefighters from Suffolk and Nassau Counties descended on the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank for the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Long Island Youth Days. The program began Friday evening with classroom instruction, followed by hands-on training on Saturday to put newly learned skills into action.

Participants, including junior firefighters and explorers from various departments, engaged in practical training exercises covering high-angle rescue, hose operations, EMS trauma care and “Stop the Bleed” techniques, forcible entry, and more. Beyond technical skills, the young firefighters also developed valuable leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities that will serve them both in their fire departments and daily life.

Training sessions were led by instructors from the Suffolk County Fire Rescue EMS Division, the Suffolk County Fire Academy, and other experienced firefighters and EMS personnel. “Events like this give junior firefighters the opportunity to hone skills that directly benefit their communities and fire departments,” said a spokesperson from the Suffolk County Fire Academy.

County and state officials were also present throughout the day, including Suffolk County Fire Rescue Commissioner Rudy Sunderman Jr., Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, NY State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, and FASNY President Eugene Perry. Their attendance highlighted the ongoing support for youth development in the firefighting community.
