Mastic, NY – On Saturday, August 23, at approximately 9:10 a.m., the Mastic Fire Department was dispatched to William Floyd Elementary School on Lexington Road for a reported commercial fire.

A worker at the school called 911 after observing smoke in the boiler room located at the rear of the building.

Assistant Chief Rudy Sunderman was the first to arrive and confirmed smoke showing from the rear. He directed the crew of Mastic’s first-due engine, 5-12-1, to stretch a hose line into the boiler room, while Engine 5-12-4 arrived shortly after to provide additional support. Mutual aid was also requested for multiple engines and a ladder truck.

Firefighters quickly located the fire in the boiler room and knocked it down before it could spread. Crews searched classrooms and other areas of the school to ensure there was no fire extension, and ventilation operations were performed using windows, doors, and fans to remove smoke from the building.

Mastic Ambulance stood by at the scene with two ambulances, though no injuries were reported. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Mastic Beach, Brookhaven, Center Moriches, East Moriches, and Manorville Fire Departments.

The incident was brought under control in under an hour. The scene was then turned over to the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s Office for further investigation.
