Newton, N.J. — July 22 — The Newton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported natural gas leak at a vacant residence on Main Street at about 12:30 p.m. Squad 3 and Deputy Chief 811 arrived and were advised by a realtor that natural gas service had been restored to the residence about four days earlier. Firefighters were told that gas may have been leaking into the home during that time.

Because of the reported duration of the leak, Chief 810 requested additional Newton firefighters and mutual aid from the Andover Township Volunteer Fire Department. Newton Captain 812 and Ladder 2 responded, along with Andover Township Chiefs 3260 and 3270 and Rescue Engine 3275.

Crews conducted atmospheric monitoring, shut off the gas at the meter and ventilated the residence. After the structure was determined to be safe, the scene was turned over to Elizabethtown Gas for further investigation and service restoration. All units cleared the scene at about 1:10 p.m. No injuries were reported.
