Nassau, NY - In the morning of 21st August 2026, A powerful severe wind event struck the Sun and Surf Beach Club earlier, prompting a major multi-agency emergency response after reports of a possible tornado touchdown, structural collapse and fires.
At approximately 6:50 p.m., AB Rescue units were called to assist the Inwood Fire Department following multiple emergency calls reporting significant damage at the club. Several fire and rescue departments from across Nassau County were dispatched under the county’s technical rescue response matrix.
Emergency crews worked through extensive debris, cutting into damaged structures and searching void spaces for anyone who may have been trapped. Club members were reportedly inside when the storm hit. Fortunately, only one minor injury has been reported.
Inwood Fire Department Chief Josiyah Green later issued a press release regarding the incident. The scene has since been turned over to the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) and the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management for further assessment and investigation.
The Village of Atlantic Beach Office of Emergency Management said no storm-related damage has been identified within village boundaries. The property affected by the storm is located outside the village, although local emergency management personnel have been deployed to the scene to assist with the response.
The National Weather Service is expected to determine whether the storm damage was caused by a confirmed tornado. Until that assessment is completed, the exact nature of the weather event remains under investigation.
With extensive structural damage reported at the club, the affected facilities have been closed until further notice as emergency officials continue to assess the scene and ensure public safety.
