Montclair, N.J. — July 24 — When Montclair firefighters arrived on Friday afternoon in response to a reported house fire on North Mountain Avenue, they discovered that a home's back deck was on fire.

According to the Montclair flames Department, firefighters discovered the deck completely engulfed and partially collapsed, with flames spreading beneath the house's siding and into an outside wall. Before opening up to look for an extension inside the house, crews stretched handlines and swiftly put out the outside fire.

The results of the primary and secondary searches were negative. After learning that a dog might still be inside, firefighters also carried out a second search; the homeowner later verified the dog's safety.

Along with support from the Montclair Police Department and Montclair Ambulance Unit, agencies from West Orange, Orange, Nutley, Irvington, and Cedar Grove offered mutual aid.

At the site, one firefighter received medical attention for an injury. The Montclair Fire Department reports that no individuals were hurt. Investigators from the Montclair Fire Department are still looking into what caused the fire.
