A gas leak in a vacant business on Bloomfield Avenue prompted evacuations Thursday after firefighters found severed gas lines and dangerously high levels inside the building, officials said.

Montclair Fire Department’s Group 4 arrived to find gas readings in the explosive range. Crews, working with PSE\&G, took emergency measures to secure the leak and evacuate nearby businesses.

The situation was brought under control without injuries, and surrounding properties were later cleared to reopen
