Two commercial trucks caught fire Tuesday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike northbound near Interchange 16W, authorities said.
The East Rutherford Fire Department responded around 3:26 p.m. to find both trucks burning. Fire crews attacked the flames while mutual aid companies from Rutherford, Carlstadt and Wallington helped secure water supply lines, officials said.
Engines from Passaic and a ladder company from Rutherford covered local fire stations during the incident, according to the department.
No information on injuries or the cause of the crash was immediately available. State police were investigating.
East Rutherford officials said they were grateful for the assistance of neighboring fire departments. “Our mutual aid partners played a critical role in containing this fire,” the department said in a statement.
Turnpike traffic was disrupted in the area for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the blaze and clear the scene.
