Plane Misses Runway in Shirley, Crashes into Field

SHIRLEY, NY - On Saturday, August 17th at about 3:53 P.M., the Suffolk County Police 7th precinct was dispatched to a report of a plane crash at Forrest Ave. and Sunset Dr. in North Shirley, located just outside of the Brookhaven Airport. The Mastic Fire Department and Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Co. were activated a short time later and quickly responded to the scene.
On arrival, Police and Mastic Fire Assistant Chief Rudy Sunderman confirmed a single engine Piper PA- 24 Comanche had crash landed into a field just outside of Brookhaven Airport, striking a fence while coming down. Engine 5-12-1 and Mini Pumper 5-12-5 responded to the scene. Under the command of Chief of Department Steve Januskiewicz, members of the fire department worked to shut down the plane's batteries and fuel system/lines. They cleaned up a minor fuel spill according to a statement published by Mastic Fire Department.
The Mastic Ambulance and Stony Brook Hospital Medic-65 responded to the scene. They spoke with the occupants on board and checked them out. According to statements from police and fire officials, all four occupants were able to escape the incident without injuries. The scene was turned over to Suffolk Police Officers who remained on scene for the FAA to conduct an investigation.
