Binghamton, NY - Binghamton Fire Department crews responded to a rail yard for a smoking rail car carrying construction debris. After the fire was initially discovered in Pennsylvania, the affected car was separated from the train and brought to the Binghamton rail yard.
Firefighters and railroad personnel spent two days offloading debris, extinguishing hot spots, and using thousands of gallons of water to ensure the rail car was fully safe.
The incident highlighted the dangers posed by improperly discarded smoking materials and lithium-ion batteries, which can lead to fires far from their original source.
